Daylight Changes in Edinburgh:
- Summer Days (June to August):
- Daylight Duration: In Edinburgh, during the summer months, daylight lasts for a relatively long period of time. The city experiences what is known as “white nights,” where the sun sets after 10 PM and rises before 4 AM. This means that there is ample daylight to enjoy outdoor activities and explore the city during the long summer days.
- Winter Days (December to February):
- Daylight Duration: In contrast, during the winter months, daylight is much shorter in Edinburgh. The sun rises around 8:30 AM and sets around 3:30 PM, leaving only around 7 hours of daylight. The city experiences shorter days and longer nights, which can make it feel darker and colder. It’s important to make the most of the daylight hours during the winter if you plan to be out and about in Edinburgh.
- Yearly Daylight Shifts:
- Seasonal Contrast: Edinburgh showcases diverse daylight patterns, with longer days in summer and shorter days in winter.
As you can see, Edinburgh experiences significant changes in the amount of daylight it receives throughout the year, with long summer days and shorter winter days.
Suggested Packing List
When Packing for Edinburgh, consider including:
- Waterproof Jacket with hood: Be prepared for occasional rainfall.
- Umbrella (Wind-Permitting): If the wind is calm, an umbrella can be a handy accessory.
- Waterproof Walking Shoes: Navigate the city comfortably, especially during wet weather.
- Waterproof Backpack: Keep your belongings dry, especially if you’re out and about on rainy days.

Booking Essentials in Advance
When planning a trip to Edinburgh, it’s a good idea to book your accommodation, attractions, and travel in advance to ensure you have a place to stay and activities to do during your visit, that you have a wider range of choices, better prices, and more time to actually enjoy all that Edinburgh has to offer. Avoid wasting your valuable time standing in lines by planning your trip ahead of time.
Edinburgh Airport is the main airport serving the city and offers flights from various destinations.

Trains and buses are also good options for getting to the city from other parts of the UK. If you plan to drive, it is recommended to check for parking availability (make sure the hotel or Airbnb accommodation you are planning to book includes free parking).
Edinburgh has a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels. It is recommended to book your accommodation in advance, especially during peak season.
If you book in advance you will secure your preferred location and room type. Some popular areas to stay in Edinburgh include the Old Town, New Town, West End, and Leith.
Note: For a first-time visitor to Edinburgh, it is recommended to stay in the Old Town or City Centre. This choice will keep you close to the main attractions. However, keep in mind that it may be more expensive. Take that into consideration when planning your stay.

Many attractions offer advance booking, so you can reserve your spot and avoid long lines (From Edinburgh Castle website: if you plan to visit Edinburgh Castle: To ensure entry, it’s advisable to book your tickets online well ahead of time, particularly during the summer. Once tickets are sold out online, there will be no more available at the castle).
Best Time to Visit Edinburgh
The best time to visit Edinburgh depends on personal preference, but generally speaking, the summer months of June to August are the most popular time to visit due to the warm weather and longer daylight hours. However, it is also the busiest time of the year, so if you prefer a more quiet visit, consider visiting in the spring or autumn. Edinburgh is a city with a rich cultural heritage and is well known for its festivals, which take place throughout the year.
In late June, July, and August, eight amazing events bring a cultural feast to Edinburgh. They take place in performance venues, event spaces, and online.
Edinburgh Science Festival – 30 March – 14 April 2024
Edinburgh International Children’s Festival – 25 May – 2 June 2024
Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival – 12 – 21 July 2024
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo – 2 – 24 August 2024
Edinburgh International Festival – 2 August – 25 August 2024
Edinburgh Festival Fringe – 2 August – 26 August 2024
Edinburgh Art Festival – 9 – 25 August 2024
Edinburgh International Book Festival – 10 – 26 August 2024
Scottish International Storytelling Festival – 11 – 27 October 2024
The most famous of these is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which is the largest arts festival in the world. It takes place in August and features a diverse range of performances, including theatre, comedy, music, dance, and cabaret. During the festival, venues all over the city host performances and in this period, the city is full of life, entertainers, and tourists.
If you plan to visit Edinburgh for the festivals in August, then you are welcome. If not, it is better to plan your visit for another time so you can avoid crowds (also, everything is more expensive).
While visiting Edinburgh in December can be a magical and festive experience, there are also some reasons why it might not be the best time to visit as well. Many of the city’s tourist attractions may have reduced hours or be closed (Nov – Feb). This can limit the number of things to do and see, and make it harder to plan your itinerary.
Also, the crowds can be larger, and the prices may be higher due to the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Accommodation prices may be higher and harder to find, and it can be not so easy to find a table at a restaurant or a seat at a show.
