If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a boutique historic hotel in Edinburgh, The Scott Hotel deserves a place on your list. Dating back to the 1700s, this elegant property combines rich history with modern comfort, and its location beside Holyrood Park offers both tranquillity and spectacular views of Arthur’s Seat.
I recently stayed here, and in this Scott Hotel Edinburgh review, I’ll share why it felt like one of the city’s hidden gems.

Rooms with Historic Charm & Scottish Art
My room was beautifully decorated: cosy yet refined, with a bed so comfortable I could have slept for days. What made it truly special, though, was the art. The walls were adorned with striking pieces by Scottish modern artists, which added a contemporary touch to the historic surroundings.
It wasn’t just a hotel room, it felt like staying in a private gallery, blending history and creativity in a way that felt uniquely Edinburgh.

A handwritten welcome card and a chilled bottle of prosecco by the fireplace were the perfect finishing touches.

Dining at Bonnar’s Restaurant
No stay at The Scott Hotel is complete without dining at their restaurant: Bonnar’s, set beneath a magnificent frescoed ceiling. The atmosphere is as memorable as the food itself.

For my main, I chose the Castle Game’s Venison with charred greens, roasted corn, and house BBQ sauce, tender and full of flavour.

Dessert was even more surprising: a Morning Brie custard with spruce syrup and a burnt onion seed cracker. Unexpected, creative, and delicious.

Breakfast the next morning was a hearty Scottish affair, ideal fuel for a day of exploring the city.

Location: Quiet but Connected
The Scott Hotel is located in Edinburgh’s Southside, just outside the Old Town. While it’s about a 25–30 minute walk from Greyfriars Bobby statue, it’s well connected, with a bus stop right outside the entrance gates, you can reach the Royal Mile or Princes Street in around 10 minutes.
Holyrood Park is right next door, making it easy to enjoy a morning walk or even climb Arthur’s Seat for panoramic city views. For travellers who want peace and quiet while still being close to Edinburgh’s highlights, this is the perfect balance.
Final Thoughts
The Scott Hotel is more than just a place to stay, it’s an experience that blends history, art, elegance, and fine dining in a setting full of character. From prosecco by the fireplace to rooms decorated with Scottish modern art, and from hearty breakfasts to dining beneath the magnificent frescoed ceiling at Bonnar’s, every moment feels thoughtfully designed to reflect Edinburgh’s charm.
A couple of things to keep in mind before booking: there’s no lift in the building, so you’ll need to climb some stairs (worth it for those stunning Arthur’s Seat views, but not ideal if you have mobility issues). The hotel also doesn’t have family rooms, making it better suited to couples or solo travellers. And while it’s about a 30-minute walk into the Old Town, the bus stop right outside the gates makes getting into the city centre quick and easy.
The Scott Hotel Edinburgh Review Verdict: If you’re searching for a boutique and historic hotel in Edinburgh with Arthur’s Seat views, and you love the idea of immersing yourself in history, elegance, and unforgettable dining under a frescoed ceiling, The Scott is a truly special choice.
