First Things First: Buses & Trams, Your City Explorers
Edinburgh primarily uses Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams. They’re like best friends, you can often use the same payment methods for both, making your life much simpler.
Airport to City Centre: Bus or Tram?
“Just landed! Should we take the bus or the tram into the city? What’s the difference?” This is a common visitor dilemma! Both the Airlink 100 Bus and the Tram will whisk you from Edinburgh Airport into the city centre. Hereās how to pick your perfect ride:
- Airlink 100 Bus:
- 24/7 Service: Your reliable best friend if you’re arriving very late at night or super early in the morning, it’s your only public transport option!
- Key Stops: Hits Waverley Bridge (ideal for Old Town access), Princes Street, and Haymarket.
- Why choose it? Great if your accommodation is closer to the Old Town or you need that late-night flexibility.
- Edinburgh Tram:
- Goes Further to Leith: Perfect if your accommodation is in the vibrant Leith area, or the West End.
- Not 24/7: Double-check last tram times if you’re on a late flight.
- Key Stops: Serves Haymarket, Princes Street, and St Andrew Square (handy for the New Town).
- Why choose it? Excellent for Leith, or if you prefer a smoother, less bus-like ride.
For most City Centre locations: Honestly, either works well! Pull up your hotel on Google Maps and simply choose the stop (bus or tram) that’s the shortest walk. Easy peasy!

Getting Around Edinburgh: Paying is a Breeze (and Smart!)
Once you’re in the city, getting around is a cinch. Forget rummaging for exact change (though it is accepted!). The absolute easiest way to pay is contactless bank card or phone payment.
- Simply Tap & Go: Just tap your contactless card or device when you board the bus, or tap on/off the platform for the tram.
- Automatic Daily Capping: Hereās a smart tip! If you use the same contactless card or device for all your journeys in a day, the system automatically caps your fare. This means you’ll never pay more than the cost of a Day Ticket (currently Ā£5.50 for adults), even if you make more journeys. It’s essentially a day ticket, without having to ask for one!
- How it works:
- Buses: Just a single tap on the reader next to the driver when you board.
- Trams: This is important! Tap on the platform validator before you get on, and tap off again on the platform after you get off. This ensures you’re charged correctly and benefit from the cap.
- Day Tickets (Still an Option): If you prefer a physical ticket, an Adult Day Ticket is still a great option for unlimited daily travel on both Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams. Ask the bus driver for one (Ā£5.50) or buy it from a tram stop vending machine.

Your Secret Weapons: Google Maps & The Lothian Buses App
- Google Maps: Your ultimate guide. Pop in your destination, select the public transport option, and it will:
- Tell you the exact bus/tram number you need.

Quick Tips for a Smooth Ride:
- Buses are frequent: Especially in central Edinburgh, you’ll rarely wait long.
- Give a wave: At a bus stop, give a little wave to the approaching bus (focus on the driver) to signal you want them to stop.
- Press the bell: While on the bus, press the bell once to let the driver know you want the next stop.
- Avoid eating: It’s generally best to avoid eating or drinking on public transport.
- Accessibility: Both buses and trams have features like ramps for easy access.
