My Personal Recommendation:

If you’re looking for classic Harry Potter merchandise and want to feel like you’re shopping in Diagon Alley itself, Museum Context is your spot. It’s a treasure trove of gifts and novelties with that bustling, magical shop atmosphere. Perfect for picking up souvenirs, gifts for friends, or just soaking in the wizarding world vibes.

If you’re interested in the artistry behind the films and want something truly unique, the House of MinaLima is an absolute must-visit. It offers a deeper dive into the visual magic of the films and is owned and designed by MinaLima – the actual graphic designs behind the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films! This is where you’ll find authentic prop recreations and museum-quality prints.

My top tip? If time allows, visit both! They’re just a short walk from each other. I’d recommend starting with the visually stunning Victoria Street and Museum Context to experience that iconic Diagon Alley atmosphere, then heading down to Cockburn Street for the artistic gallery experience at the House of MinaLima.

1.Greyfriars Kirkyard

Most people know Greyfriars Kirkyard for the story of Bobby, the loyal dog who famously guarded his master’s grave for 14 years. But if you look a little closer at the weathered headstones, you’ll find a different kind of history – the kind that inspired the Wizarding World.

It’s widely believed that J.K. Rowling wandered these paths while naming her characters. You’ll definitely want to track down the grave of Thomas Riddell, which many think was the real-life spark for the name of Lord Voldemort himself. There’s something incredibly atmospheric about standing there with the Castle looming in the background; you can practically feel the magic in the air.

The graveyard is usually open all the time, so it’s easy to fit into a walk through the Old Town.

2.George Heriot’s School 

Standing in Greyfriars Kirkyard, it’s impossible to ignore the resemblance between George Heriot’s School and the towers of Hogwarts. With its grand sandstone turrets and four distinct houses, the school has long been linked to the architecture of the Wizarding World. While it’s a private school, you can get the best view of its striking gothic silhouette right from the graveyard paths.

3.The Elephant House Café

The Elephant House Café is the most well-known of the cafes in which author J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter novels and remains one of the most iconic landmarks in Edinburgh. While the café was closed for several years following a major fire in August 2021, it has since officially reopened as of December 29, 2025, welcoming fans and visitors back to its historic location.

Note: Also, you can visit their Magical Cafe on 30 Victoria Street and enjoy some butterbeer or a tasty hot chocolate with your very own view of ‘Diagon Alley’.

4.Victoria Street aka Diagon Alley

Victoria Street is considered the real-life Diagon Alley, a cobblestone shopping street with stores selling wizardly supplies. It is believed by some that it is where J.K. Rowling got her inspiration for Diagon Alley. Also, you can visit Museum Context on 40 Victoria Street (a 3-storeyed narrow shop that sells official Harry Potter merchandise).

• The Department of Magic: This Magic Potion Tavern and Escape Room lets you brew your own magical drink. The Leaky Cauldron-like interior makes it a fantastic end to your Harry Potter tour.
• J.K. Rowling’s Handprints: On the Royal Mile near the City Chambers, you’ll find J.K. Rowling’s golden handprints, commemorating her Edinburgh Award in 2008. A popular spot for Potterheads!

The Department of Magic

And to enhance the wizard experience, you can go to The Department of Magic – it is a Magic Potion Tavern and Escape Room. You can choose and create your own magical drink, which is fun to create.

During the one-hour session, follow instructions to create your special potion, and at the end, you’ll be given a shot in a smoking chest. The place looks a lot like the Leaky Cauldron inside, making it a perfect way to finish your Harry Potter tour.

J. K. Rowling’s Handprints

When on the Royal Mile, stop by the City Chambers near Mary King’s Close. J.K. Rowling, after finishing the Harry Potter series, received The Edinburgh Award in 2008 through a city vote. Look for her slightly faded golden handprints on the flagged floor just outside the City Chambers, touched by countless Potterheads.
